The Path to Excellence: Efficiency and Effectiveness Through Education

Military lodging, family housing and unaccompanied personnel housing (UPH) professionals converge in San Diego, Calif., next month for the Professional Housing Management Association's (PHMA) Professional Development Seminar (PDS) XXIV and Trade Expo 2012.

The seminar takes place from Jan. 30-Feb. 3 at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center.

An estimated 1,400 military and civilian personnel, including active-duty military, government employees and housing and lodging personnel from the private sector, are expected to attend the event for the purpose of enhancing military lodging and housing facilities.

The theme of PDS XXIV is “The Path to Excellence: Efficiency and Effectiveness Through Education.” According to the association, “The field of military housing is an evolutionary one. PDS is a rare opportunity for military housing professionals in all branches of the military service, including private sector employees, to gain insight and fresh perspectives by learning next to their counterparts. AFRC FEATURE:
Dragon Hill Lodge — Discover Seoul

For more than two decades, the Dragon Hill Lodge (DHL) has served as a year-round official and unofficial travel destination for servicemembers and their families stationed in Korea.

Located on the South Post of Yongsan Garrison in Seoul, Dragon Hill is one of five Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRCs) operated by the Army Installation Management Command (IMCOM) Family and MWR Programs (G9) Division.

Historically, the Dragon Hill Lodge has an annual occupancy that consists of close to 65 percent official travel — temporary duty (TDY)/permanent change of station (PCS) — and 35 percent leisure travel.

With the pending 2016 milestone for transformation of U.S. Forces in Korea (USFK), which will eliminate a significant portion of DHL's official travel occupancy, DHL is in the process of transforming its image.

LODGING PROFILE:
North Island Beach Cottages — Location, Location, Location

Stay! Play! Relax! That is the motto for Navy Getaways, the recreational arm of the Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) Navy Lodging Program.

Navy Getaways locations provide recreational experiences for active-duty, retirees, nonappropriated-fund (NAF) employees, Department of Defense (DoD) civilians and sponsored guests.

Military families can unwind for a few days in either vacation rentals — cabins, cottages, townhomes, condos, bunkhouses and resort-style vacation rentals — or recreational vehicle (RV) spots and tent camping sites that feature barbecue areas, laundry machines, bathhouses, kids' play areas, game rooms and community centers.
