NS Great Lakes Unveils New Warrior Zone

NS Great Lakes, Ill., held the grand opening (including an open house and demonstrations) of its new Warrior Zone training facility during Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Customer Appreciation Week, Sept. 22-28, 2014. Funded by an Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) Grant through Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), the Warrior Zone project cost $110,000, which included all renovations and equipment, according to Installation MWR Program Director John Prue.

“The Warrior Zone was designed by the MWR professionals at Great Lakes for functional fitness and high intensity training,” said Prue. “This space was designed to meet the needs of military personnel and expose them to cutting-edge equipment. Functional fitness includes workouts that are directed toward daily activities and operational tasks. High-intensity training promotes fat burning, and improves athletic performance while helping break through fitness plateaus.”

The Warrior Zone was created in a low-use area of a large gymnasium in the west end of historic Gym 4, which “was rarely used,” according to Prue, and provided the necessary square footage for the project. “We were creating a total fitness area focused on the Navy’s newest sailors — or warriors!” he pointed out.

“The fitness renovation was designed with all of our patrons in mind, to include Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, family members, retirees, wounded warriors, and exceptional family members,” said Semper Fit Director Adrian Villalobos. “This remodel was focused on the functionality of the building and increasing the amount of usable space, with a special emphasis on strength and conditioning, injury preventative methodology, High Intensity Tactical Training (HITT) and general modernization.” ...

ATRA Mid-Year Conference Brings Together Industry’s Best

ATRA Mid-Year Conference Brings Together Industry’s BestThe American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) Mid-Year Conference, March 8-10, in Manchester, New Hampshire, brings together approximately 250-300 certified therapeutic recreation specialists (CTRSs) in the perfect setting for learning and networking. Attendees will have access to top-notch educational sessions from respected leaders in the field, as well as opportunities to connect and share best practices with peers at the many events planned at the Radisson Hotel Manchester Downtown, the host hotel for the conference.

“The conference theme is Together Toward Tomorrow, which speaks to the need for our organization to unify and move forward while embracing strategies that ensure consumers have access to highly qualified providers of recreational therapy (RT) service to enhance their functioning and quality of life,” explained ATRA President Debbie Robinson, MS, CTRS/L, FACHE, who is currently director of Rehabilitation at New Hampshire Hospital, a state-run facility. “For the first time we are offering free preconference sessions to attendees; these special sessions feature knowledge about core principles, such as standards of practice and accreditation for practitioners, faculty and students.”

Mehrens pointed out that for the “Natural OPEs” funds are available to Airman and Family Services (AFS) Flight Child and Youth Programs (CYP) to enhance their OPEs while incorporating nature components.

The Opening General Session on Sunday March 8, from 5:30-7:00 p.m., features Craig A. Miller, author of “This is How it Feels: A Memoir of Attempting Suicide and Finding Life.”

“The ATRA Mid-Year Conference typically draws CTRSs from throughout the U.S. and the hosting region,” noted Robinson. “We are excited this year to feature some well-recognized speakers and highlight local expertise while offering fun and unique social opportunities for travelers new to New Hampshire.
